Coaching for public speaking

Speaking in public can be a daunting experience and one of the most common phobias. According to a public poll where 2,000 people were asked to rank society’s most pervasive fear, having to Auditorium - Kentspeak in public ranked higher than being concerned with death? (The Times, Science, 30.10.2013.)

I can work with you to develop your skills and confidence to be able to speak in public, whether for a special one-off occasion or for your work where delivering talks to colleagues or to an unfamiliar audience is part of your role.

I have given many talks around the world in countries including the USA, Japan, France, Denmark, Italy, Turkey, Finland, Germany and of course, all over the UK and know how important preparation knowing your your audience are and the skills to give a memorable presentation. I have also written and published on rhetoric and the art of public speaking, focusing particularly on what makes  political speeches successful.

In November 2016, I gave a TEDx talk on the subject of “Telling Stories” that looked at the power of stories and how we ‘narrativise’, that is, structure our experiences into a narrative form. You can hear my talk (which is available on Youtube) here. In my talk, I described how people tell stories as part of our socialisation and how we organise these experiences to be able to share them. I also presented some of my research on trauma narratives. It was an unforgettable experience to be a TEDx speaker!
